Privacy for file uploads

What filebin stores, how shared links work, and when files expire.

Files and upload records

filebin stores uploaded file bytes and records such as filename, file type, size, creation and expiry dates, titles, descriptions and download counts. Signed-in uploads are associated with your shared account. Upload records include a keyed IP fingerprint used for limits and abuse handling. It is kept with the upload record until cleanup; moderation records or preservation holds can retain data longer. Metadata embedded in an uploaded file is preserved with the file bytes.

Shared links and search

filebin shares files through download links. Anyone who receives or is forwarded a new file’s link can download it. File pages are unlisted, omitted from sitemaps, and request no indexing. Search engines may retain older entries temporarily. Legacy files have separate access rules; retired password-protected files are restricted to their owners.

Safety processing

Uploaded files are checked against bans and can be processed by configured malware scanners. The byte scanner receives file contents. Routine VirusTotal checks look up the file’s hash; an operator-triggered full scan can submit the file contents to VirusTotal. These checks guide moderation. Downloaded files can still contain harmful content.

Expiry and deletion

Anonymous uploads expire after 30 days. Files uploaded in the signed-in browser expire after 90 days. API-key uploads have no automatic expiry. You can delete your uploads from your account. Expiry and deletion stop normal service access. Copies saved by others remain. Moderation records and files under a preservation hold can be retained after normal access ends.

Accounts and privacy questions

Accounts and sign-in are managed by pastebin.ca. Its privacy policy describes that account service. For questions about filebin’s file handling or a privacy request, use the contact details.
